Bugman’s work with nature recognised By Emily O’Connell MORE THAN 50 years ago a very young Ruud Kleinpaste had a pair of binoculars and a curiousity for birds. Now the Halswell resident has been recognised for his services to entomology, conservation and entertainment. Dr Kleinpaste, 65, has received
a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. He said his love for nature started when he was about eight-years-old and he used a pair of binoculars to watch birds outside his bedroom window. Also known as Bugman from Maggie’s Garden Show, Dr Kleinpaste admits he never expected the award.
He shares his passion with others because he wants people to learn about nature – not for recognition. “Honoured is probably the best way to describe it,” Dr Kleinpaste said. Early in his career Dr Kleinpaste spent 14 years working as an entomologist for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
In the late 1980s he began the radio talk back show, Ruud’s Awakening. He’s published regular newspaper and magazine columns and started television work with the documentary series The Enduring Land. •Turn to page 2 •New Year Honours, page 6 & 7
By Andrew King POLICE HAVE caught two teenagers accused of being involved in the Rolleston ‘drown him’ assault case. The assault took place on November 4 after a fireworks display. The police has had a difficult task determining who was involved in the incident due to a lack of co-operation. A 15-year-old says he was punched and kicked and then dragged to a water race, and had his head held under water while his attackers chanted “drown him.” Two youths, aged 15 and 16, have been referred to youth aid, a police spokeswoman said. A youth aid officer will review the case, meet with the victim and alleged offenders and determine the best course of action, which could include charges. Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the assault which left the victim with a nasty gash on his face that required stitches and a night in hospital. •Turn to page 3

from the editor’s desk I’M NOT sure if it was our photographer Martin Hunter, bugman Ruud Kleinpaste, or a very compliant tree weta. But that photo on the front page today is pretty damn good. Martin, I’m sure would put it down to great workmanship, and I wouldn’t disagree given the top pix he turns out day after day. Martin is a photographer who has an instant visualisation of what and how an image should look like well before he begins to shoot. But enough of the photographer. Top marks to Ruud for making the New Years Honours list. We feature him, and other local recipients, in today’s issue. Rudd has been around the bug world for a long time, featuring regularly in magazines and TV documentaries and other media. Ruud has had a fascination for nature since he was a boy with a pair of binoculars. Decades on he has made a career out of it. At the other end of the age spectrum Tigerlilly Perry (see page 3) is pursuing her dream with the Young Shakespeare Company. Tigerlilly is off to the Globe in London and then onto Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon, to perform. She and Cashmere’s Ben Kelly are the only two from Christchurch in the company. In the 2000s he worked on the documentary film The Bughouse, the Animal Planet documentary World’s Biggest Baddest Bugs and the 13-part series Buggin’ with Ruud. Dr Kleinpaste currently works an ecological consultant and is a trustee of Project Crimson, Kiwis for Kiwi, Air New Zealand Environment Trust, Kids Restore New Zealand and the Omaha Shorebird Protection Trust.
He’s a patron of the Little Barrier Island Supporters Trust, National Wetland Trust, Trees for Survival, Southland Community Environment Trust and Wingspan. Suprisingly though, Dr Kleinpaste never studied bugs. “It’s always been a hobby and I love it and that’s probably the best message to anybody especially children,” he said. Shakespearean stage beckons Actress off to London’s Globe Theatre By Julia Evans “ROMEO, ROMEO, wherefore art thou Romeo?” Tigerlily Perry may soon be reciting the famous Shakespearean quote at the theatre his plays were first performed in four centuries ago. Although Romeo and Juliet isn’t her favourite play. “It’s a tie between Much Ado About Nothing and Julius Caesar,” she said. The 17-year-old Papanui resident and former St Margaret’s College student is hoping to send her acting career into overdrive after landing a coveted spot in the New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company. From more than 5000 applicants, Tigerlily was selected as one of the 24 students who will fly to London to perform at the Globe Theatre. Only one other student from Christchurch made the cut, Cashmere’s Ben Kelly. Tigerlily and Ben will perform and take part in several

workshops and talks at the Globe before heading north to Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. “It’s really exciting thinking about performing there.”
Tigerlily said she expects it will be “life-changing.” Although the trip isn’t until July, Tigerlily is already hard at work fundraising for the $8500 it will take to get her there.

“I’ve been doing odd jobs,” she said. But a funding grant of $1000 from the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand has been “amazing,” she said. It comes after her recent role as the lead in the international award-winning film, A Perfect Child, made by Christ’s College and St Margaret’s students. “I’ve always been into acting. It started with the Shakespeare festival at school,” she said. Her mother was an actress, although never professionally. “Mum was an actress, she exposed me to that world and it developed when I was a kid,” she said. Tigerlily grew up with a love of reading play scripts – something she always thought was “a bit weird.” She has played Paulina and Hermione in The Winter’s Tale, Mark Antony in Anthony and Cleopatra, Trebonius from Julius Caesar and has taken the lead in Timon of Athens, Timon. But she couldn’t pick a favourite. IPCA case resolution manager Monica Robbers said due to privacy issues it cannot confirm whether it received a complaint or give any other details about the officers involved. Police have been tight-lipped over the investigation since the attack was revealed last month. However, police confirmed a search warrant was executed at a Rolleston property. Shoes and a cellphone are reported to have been seized. But police would not discuss specifics about what was taken in the raid. The teenager was assaulted when he allegedly refused to hand over his cap after he was confronted on Tennyson St at about 10.30pm.

Volunteers sought to look after park
Coming into summer, Abberley Park is the best place in St Albans to picnic and enjoy the sunshine. Friends of Abberley Park member Patricia Wallace writes about taking care of the amenity WHEN Christchuch’s summer arrived in the first week of December, families came out in droves and hit Abberley Park. They came in cars, on bikes, with scooters and pushchairs. They came in family groups, with picnics to enjoy in the park’s green spaces. They came to the new playground, to the scented garden and to the toddlers’ playground and paddling pool. They came with picnic chairs, portable barbecues and dogs too. There was at least one wedding, and special photographic settings for some local kindergarten children. Small wonder, for local residents, the Abberley Heritage Park and Garden is a very special place – a true gem in the neighbourhood. And that is no accident, a
small group of regular visitors have been playing a part. The Friends of Abberley Park is a local group that was formed with community board approval a year ago. It grew as a result of people sharing observations as they walked their dogs around the park every day after work. Their major goals include the replenishment of the scented garden that had been neglected for many years, and support for the monarch butterfly colony that is at risk of declining. There is now a small core of committed volunteers who help to maintain the park, undertaking tasks such as painting the seats, picking up litter, helping halt the invasive spread of acanthus, monitoring damage and reporting vandalism. With council help, they coordinated the recent Mad Winter Picnic in conjunction with community plantings when the new playground was completed – with the aim of encouraging

more people to become involved with caring for the park. Watering the garden is a major task. As summer advances, it becomes more critical – but until now, it has been undertaken by just three women (one of whom works full-time, the others are in their 70s). The friends need more help – are you prepared to volunteer? But as the holiday season approaches and daily use of the park escalates, the friends ask for even more community help. Council signage asks that users ‘look after the plants and facilities’, and ‘do not engage in dangerous activities or create a nuisance to other park users or neighbouring residents’. Increased park usage simply requires everyone to show more consideration for each other. So the Friends ask everyone to please: •Try to keep pushchairs and cycles, within the 1m perimeter
boundary when using the playground, to enable other park users unhindered access to the green space. •Advise families who take their pets that dogs are not allowed on the playground, in fact not within 1m of playgrounds. Nor are dogs permitted within the paddling pool area. •Discourage people from parking cycles against park benches or loading them with gear that prevents other park users from sitting on them. •Teach children not to walk or ride on the gardens or to pick the flowers. •Remind folk that keeping cars out of the park and not treating pathways like trail-bike tracks are public safety issues. •If you would like to become involved, please contact Friends of Abberley Park facebook page, or give your name to the St Albans Residents Association.

Readers respond to city councillor Mike Davidson’s bid to reinstate Papanui Bush, a native forest chopped down by settlers in the 19th-century Jonathon Chambers – I am definitely supportive of this proposal and any proposal to create new areas of native bush within the north or north-west part of the city. Attracting more native bird life into the north western suburbs and Christchurch in general is something I would love to see over the coming decades. Also, the ability to connect with nature via walking tracks within regenerating bush would be welcome in this part of the city. I would like to point out the plans for a large area of regenerating native forest and wetland that is planned for the Cranford basin. The Papanui bush regeneration project would certainly compliment this but I would hope that the Cranford basin project would take precedence if they were at all competing for resources as the Cranford basin is a much larger area with greater potential for achieving the aims of increased native biodiversity and bird life. I note that city councillor Mike Davidson stated start up capital of $10,000 was needed. I wonder if the council is able to tap into the Labour-led Governments’ plans to have one billion trees planted in the next decade to obtain some funding for the above projects.

Kathleen Crisley – This is the same city councillor who during his election campaign said he would look at trimming the non-essentials from the council budget so that rates were kept in check. The problem is, once elected, those that sit at the council table all come up with pet projects, all for ‘just’ a few thousand dollars. In postquake Christchurch, we have to sharpen our pencils and our priorities. Nice to haves must wait. Many ratepayers are also tightening their belts to fund rates increases. I have lived in Papanui for almost 20 years with nothing more than a historic marker in the Papanui Domain about the former native bush. I think the regeneration project can wait a few more years until the council and ratepayers have cleared a lot of the expenses for earthquake recovery. Angela Oliver – Yes but it should be in the red zone and much larger. Robin Stove – There are plenty of areas if native plantings in the city. I believe there is more area of native bush in the city than pre- European times. Remember there are some

Achievements and service to which manages 120 industry-led projects aimed at developing new products from waste streams. He chaired the Canterbury Development Corporation from 2007 to 2016, during which time he oversaw the establishment of the CORE Education. In a return to personal research, Dr Carnaby has established a new capability in wool research now based at Lincoln Agritech. This initiative aims to reposition wool as a raw material for new industrial uses in cosmetics, personal care, paper making and synthetic fibre sectors.
Members of the community have been acknowledged on the New Year Honours list for their achievements and work in the community •Cameron Moore – Fendalton, member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to manufacturing, industry and community. Mr Moore has been a member of the New Zealand Manufacturers and Exporters Association Council since 1986 and was president from 2000 to 2002. He has held voluntary positions as a NZMEA board member and director of the Mancan Foundation since 1995. Mr Moore was a member of the New Zealand Institute of Management Southern Board from 1987 to 2006 and was president from 1995 to 1996. He is a current Alan Crothall Fund trustee. Mr Moore played a major role in the development of the Plastics Institute of New Zealand – serving as national president and is a life member. He was a board member of the Canterbury Development Corporation from 2001 to 2010 and was deputy chairman from
2008. He was a board member of CORE Education from 2003 to 2013 including time as chairman. Mr Moore has been involved with scouts in New Zealand since 1978. He’s been chairman of the governance board of Blue Skies since 1987, has been on the National Jamboree organising committee and an assistant area commissioner. He’s also been in a number of leadership positions in the Anglican Church. •Lorraine Logan – Burnside, Queen’s Service Medal for services to music. In her role as chairwoman of the Friends of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Ms Logan helped raise about $400,000 for the group. She has volunteered many hours to organising fundraising events and maintaining the network of classical music enthusiasts. Ms Logan was made a life member of the Friends of

Mr Stewart has used his business and governance skills in a voluntary capacity to support national and community organisations. She played a pivotal role in the organisation and execution of the week-long celebrations of Lincoln’s 150th anniversary in 2013. Mrs Morrish has developed strong contacts for the historical society with local, regional, and national heritage networks, including providing support for the establishment of the neighbouring Ellesmere Historical Society. She has acted as librarian and archivist, recording the details of artefacts, photographs, and print items. Her careful stewardship, dedication and perseverance has led to the recording and preservation of local history. Mrs Morrish has also had prominent roles with the Ellesmere Golf Club, serving on a number of committees and as lady president for five years.

Reece eyes up another national title By Andrew King BURWOOD PARK’S Reece Falck will be looking to bring home another national tennis title when he competes in Auckland on Saturday. Fifteen-year-old Reece, who was crowned national 14 and under champion last year, will compete in the national junior team’s event in the 16 and under section and in the 16 and under singles and doubles tournament. He said he is excited to get stuck in at the tournament and feels he has a good opportunity to take another national title. “I am feeling pretty confident. I am hitting the ball pretty well,” he said. Reece returned from Auckland last week where he attended a three-day training camp working on technique and fitness. The Shirley Boys’ High School student is coached by his father Andrew, who is the head coach at the Burwood Park club. He will also compete in the doubles with fellow Cantabrian Jamie Garbett, 16, and in the national junior team’s event and said the team has good depth and should be in with a chance to win a title. Canterbury is sending three teams to the event. The 16 and under team, who will compete in Auckland from

LAMB CHOPS WITH MINT SAUCE AND CRUSHED PEAS
Ingredients
Ingredients
4 Tbsp orange liqueur, or peach schnapps 6 white peaches 1 banana 1 cup vanilla custard 200g sponge cakes ¾ cup passionfruit pulp ¾ cup whipped cream
4 lamb shoulder chops Marinade 2 Tbsp olive oil ⅓ cup honey ½ cup fresh mint, chopped 2 Tbsp white wine vinegar ½ tsp salt Crushed peas 2 cups frozen peas 3 mint leaves, finely chopped 25g butter ½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper 2 Tbsp creme fraiche
Directions Halve, peel, stone and thinly slice the peaches. Combine the schnapps with the custard. Cut the sponge into 2cm cubes. Place some sliced peaches in the base of six individual serving dishes or drinking glasses. Spoon a little passionfruit pulp over the top. Add some cubes of cake. Top with the custard, smoothing with a spoon. Add some whipped cream and smooth the top. Carefully place more peach slices and sliced banana on top and drizzle with a little more passionfruit pulp.
Directions Mix together all marinade ingredients and cover the lamb with it. Leave to marinate for one hour or overnight. Preheat the oven to 190 deg C. Place the lamb chops in a roasting tray and cook for 7min then turn over and cook for a further 7min or until cooked through. Blanch the peas for 5min, drain and add the mint to the peas.

But that is not the case for a tight-knit community at Monet Vale in Rolleston. The street of 24 houses have been making the most of the district council’s Meet Your Street initiative which encourages the neighbours to get to know each other. About 30 residents on Monet Vale scored a free barbecue from the district council recently. As part of the initiative, the district council has been encouraging residents to organise and run their own street gatherings and barbecues. A subsidy of up to $75 is available for each street gathering. The district council is also travelling with its mobile barbecue to 18 locations across Selwyn over the summer. Resident Yvonne Otto said her street is very

LAZY Sundays are back and Oakley Grenell headlines at the event launch this Sunday from 3.30pm in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Acoustic guitar and vocals is the perfect soundtrack to chill to on your Sunday, and to kick off the Ingham's Lazy Sundays 2018 programme! Oakley will fluently blend blues and contemporary soul, with a dash of his country roots thrown in. We are lucky to have Christchurch jazz super group Departure Lounge to guest. Having released an 11th album in NZ, Oakley will perform originals from his back catalogue and a few covers thrown in for good measure. Over the years Grenell has supported Ben Harper, Salmonella Dub, Ce Fu, and has also worked with a host of local and international talent collaborating on all his projects.
